Was it a shot or not?

One shot or not?

So much that can happen in such a small time. Check the clip below and share with us if the foul you’re about to witness is made in the Act of Shooting yes or no. Don’t be mistaken: the situation we are talking about is not the one in the replay, but the one where the player lines up to go to the charity stripe! Lees verder “Was it a shot or not?”

Greencamp Refereetime big success!!

Diquelou with one of the mentors of the camp: Eddy Viator

Refereetime is a French website that aims to bring news for basketballreferees and helps them improve. One of the activities they organized recently was a refereecamp in Orly where new refs were schooled to start their careers, and other aspiring refs were mentored by big names such as Eddy Viator (Olympic finalists in Rio 2016) or Yohann Rosso (Olympics 2021). Blow your whistle or not…

One of the most challenging parts of our great work on court is deciding to blow the whistle or not. Some things that will not harm the flow of the play can be ignored. In the clip below you will see some parts of the play look like they can be called. The referees decide not to. Do you agree with them???
In the final sequence two of them do blow their whistle. Do you agree with them? And as always: if you can’t explain it don’t call it.

Foul or no call?

Officiating Basketball is really cool but sometimes really hard as well. It’s up to us as referees to make the best out of it. The situation in the following clip is kinda cool and makes for a great evening (or whole day) of discussing stuff with your refereefriends. We are curious at headquarters: What do you see, what would you call and why??  Lees verder “Foul or no call?”

What would you call??

A long time ago a coach was complaining to me about me and my partner not calling things on midcourt. Fouls and violations. I didn’t understand what he meant back then, but later on I figured it out.  Let’s not only call things close to the basket. Example in the clip below. What would you do here?? And did you immediately recognize what happened or are you rerunning  the clip to see what’s wrong?

U foul or normal foul?

Clips are a marvellous way to really understand the essence of what is happening on court. We sometimes get questions about the clips: it’s 3po and I normally do only 2po games. Good question. Let’s reward that question with a short answer: the situations occurring in the clips can arise no matter the number of refs on the court. Every game will have traveling situations or personal fouls.
In the clip below there is a foul too. The question is: do we call a normal foul or an Unsportsmanlike foul?? Share with us your opinion and off course: Why you pick this decision. Because: ‘If you can’t explain it, don’t call it’

Cover your violations!

We’ve stated before and it’s one of the things we’ll repeat from time to time. One of the tips to make your life easier on court is: cover your violations. You and your partners will benefit from it, not only because the players and will focus on themselves, but also: play will be more honest. We’ll get into that a little more later on if you guys want. To have you guys thinking about the topic we invite you to share your opinion about the clip down here: Violation or a no call? Lees verder “Cover your violations!”
